Return to Hikes

Description:  This is a fun hike in the San Gabriel Mountains (Angeles National Forest) and moderately strenuous (not for first timers). The hike starts at the end of the paved road.  You should see the trail marker (Windy Gap Trail)  from the parking lot.  From there the trail winds through oak, pine and cedar trees and crosses the South Hawkins

Location:  Take the 605 freeway north to the 210 freeway.  Proceed east on the 210 freeway and exit HWY 39 (Azusa Ave exit).  Drive approximately 25 miles north on HWY 39 (San Gabriel Canyon Road) to the Crystal Lake entrance.  Park in the large dirt clearing to the right just before the locked gate.  Those wishing just to camp will stay at Crystal Lake (site - $10 per night; $5 per extra vehicle).  Those parking at the trailhead will require an Adventure Pass.

Comments:  This is a moderate hike that can also double as a car camp since the trailhead leaves from the campground.  Be sure to purify all water before using it.
